Today’s GIVE post got me feeling all inspired and loving my darwinian (read: neglected) garden.

These hen and chicks were planted by my ex in a spurt of succulent frenzy, and they’ve managed to weather my inattentive care over the last year. I took a couple out, thinking I could transplant them (it didn’t work), so there’s a couple empty spots in the pot, but they seem to be filling back in gradually. I even accidentally dumped the contents of my rain gutter onto them, and they still seem to forgive me and continue to grow. For a little while, they had the most beautiful pink and yellow flowers…I haven’t wanted to remove the dried remains of them…hopefully they’ll come back next year.

I’m essentially a city kid–one of my first questions after moving into this house was how you could tell what was a weed. And in the first year, I fought hard to protect some apparent weeds that had lovely flowers. Gardening requires a tougher heart than I have. Guess that’s why I’m better with dogs.

So the art…I’m not doing as much art as I’d originally hoped. A surprising amount of time is spent tending to this blog I’ve thrown together on the ashes of a previous blog (I’ve blogged off and on since at least Y2K). I didn’t want to spend much time on it, so there’s all sorts of mess here and there (you’d never guess I make my living at this stuff…), but I figure done is more important than perfect.

Right, the art. So I’m not doing as much as I’d hoped, but sitting and drawing and sketching is one of my big goals, so that’s been good. We’ll see if I dust off the paintings. And we’ll see what happens when I run out of stuff I’d made previously. Might get ugly in here. Or might be amazing.
